Upgrading From an M1 With 16GB

Apple compares the new Mac mini against an M1 with 16GB, the same machine on the author's desk. These are Apple's numbers, measured on M6 and M4 units with 32GB, so a 16GB base model may land lower.

Task (Apple's test)M4 vs M1M6 vs M1
Time to first token in LM Studio (14B model, 4-bit)2.8x13.5x
Spreadsheet calculation in Excel1.6x2.3x
Image processing in Affinity1.8x3.2x
Alchemy plug-ins in Logic Pro1.4x2.7x
Ray-traced rendering in Blender4.8x10.3x
  • Memory. 16GB was the most an M1 Mac mini could have. The base M6 also has 16GB, so moving from an M1 16GB to a base M6 adds cores and speed but no extra memory for containers, browser tabs or local models. The M6, 24GB, 512GB at ₱90,990 is the cheapest step up in memory, and the M6 can be configured to 32GB.
  • Ports. The M1's two USB-A ports are gone. You get two USB-C ports on the front, three Thunderbolt 4 ports on the back, and HDMI. Count your USB-A keyboards, drives and dongles before you sell the old one.
  • Displays and network. The M1 drives up to two external displays. The M6 drives up to three and has 2.5Gb Ethernet and Wi-Fi 7.
  • Size. The footprint shrinks from 19.7 cm to 12.7 cm square, and the weight from 1.2 kg to 0.67 kg.

From the Author

I bought the Mac mini M1 first and found it harder to use. It comes with no screen, keyboard or mouse, so I added a 27-inch 4K monitor for about ₱16,000 plus an MX keyboard and mouse. That setup kept me at one desk, so I bought the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro, and it has been my daily driver since.

Which One to Buy

  • Count the whole setup. A monitor like the author's takes the base M6 to about ₱80,990, before a keyboard and mouse. If you work in more than one place, price a MacBook against that total.
  • Your M1 16GB still keeps up. Keep it. The base M6 at ₱64,990 is faster but has the same 16GB.
  • Memory is what slows you down. Go to 24GB: the M6 at ₱90,990, or the M5 Pro at ₱119,990 if you also want more CPU and GPU cores and up to 64GB.
  • You want the M4 to save money.Beyond the Box's M4 listings were sold out in every configuration when we checked. Ask the store before you go.
  • Paying cash. Apple PH was ₱500 to ₱1,000below Power Mac Center's cash price for every model. We did not check other resellers for the M6. Compare reseller prices on our price compare tool before you pay.
