Aircon Buying Guide Philippines 2026: What HP, Inverter or Not, and the Meralco Cost

Size up by half a step for a ceiling over 3 m or an open-plan layout, a west-facing wall with standard glass, floor-to-ceiling glass, or several people or heat-making appliances in the room. Size up a full step for a top-floor unit with direct sun.

An oversized unit cools the room too fast, so the compressor cycles on and off more often. Midea says the air ends up cold but clammy. Size up only when the room needs it.

A non-inverter compressor runs at full speed until the room is cool, then switches off and on again. An inverter compressor slows down to hold the temperature. Here are same-brand pairs from the DOE list, with the kWh it prints for each:

DOE works out the monthly figure from rated watts and a set number of hours, and assumes fewer hours for an inverter, so the gap is an estimate. The CSPF view is like-for-like: the Panasonic inverter uses about 23% less electricity for the same cooling (3.34 / 4.36), and the Kolin about 18% less. The calculator above uses that ratio with your own hours.

A non-inverter still fits a guest room used a few hours a week. It costs less to buy, and you may not run it long enough to earn the difference back.

The DOE label runs from 1 star (least efficient) to 5 stars (most efficient). The stars come from the unit's CSPF, so more stars means less electricity for the same cooling. The cutoffs differ by unit type and capacity, so compare stars only between similar units. On the DOE list, Fujidenzo's WAR-632IGT (CSPF 3.21) gets 1 star and Astron's TC-LMA150 (CSPF 3.21) gets 2.

The label has a QR code that leads to more product and performance information online, supplied by the manufacturer or seller. Scan it and check that the model matches what you are buying. You can also look the model up on pelp.doe.gov.ph, the DOE's public product list. Its CSPF figure is a better comparison than a savings percentage in an ad.

• Window type: one box, no tubing, and it needs a window opening or a wall provision. Usually louder indoors. Teko lists installation at ₱1,500 per unit, against ₱9,500 for a 1.0 HP split.
• Split type: a quiet indoor unit plus an outdoor compressor. It needs tubing, a spot for the outdoor unit, and an installer.
• Condos: bedroom window units are commonly capped at 1.0 HP, because larger ones drip condensation that ruins wall paint. Splits usually come with 10 feet of free tubing, and a living room often needs 30 feet or more. Read the condo appliance checklist and ask your admin for the rules in writing.

Split-type installers include the first 10 feet of copper piping. Teko charges +₱350 per additional foot and AirPro ₱450. For a 30-foot run, the extra 20 feet come to ₱7,000 at Teko's rate and ₱9,000at AirPro's. AirPro lists ₱10,000 for the first 10 feet on a 1.0 HP unit, which includes one circuit breaker and the outdoor bracket.

• Ask whether the breaker, the outlet and the outdoor bracket are in the quoted price.
• Budget for a cleaning every few months. A clogged filter makes the unit work harder.
• Ask whether the warranty covers the compressor and the parts separately, and for how long.
• Buy from an official store or LazMall / Shopee Mall so the warranty and returns are honored.

What HP aircon do I need for a 20 sqm room?

A 1.0 HP aircon. Midea Philippines' sizing table puts 18 to 22 sqm at 1.0 HP. Size up by half a step for a ceiling over 3 m, an open-plan layout, a west-facing wall with standard glass, floor-to-ceiling glass, or several people or heat-making appliances. A top-floor unit with direct sun needs one full step.

Is an inverter aircon worth it in the Philippines?

Yes, if you run it most nights. On the DOE list, Panasonic's 1.0 HP inverter window unit (CW-U921JPH, CSPF 4.36) works out to 106.92 kWh a month and its non-inverter twin (CW-N920JPH, CSPF 3.34) to 181.22 kWh. At Meralco's ₱14.7424/kWh (September 2026) that is ₱1,576 against ₱2,672, a gap of ₱1,096 a month. DOE calculates those figures from rated watts and a set number of hours, and assumes fewer hours for an inverter, so the gap is an estimate. For a guest room used a few hours a week, a non-inverter is fine.

How much does a 1 HP inverter aircon add to my Meralco bill?

About ₱2,274 a month at 8 hours a night, based on the Panasonic pair on the DOE list. The non-inverter (839 W rated) costs ₱2,969 for 8 hours, 30 days at ₱14.7424/kWh. An inverter with CSPF 4.36 against 3.34 uses about 23% less electricity for the same cooling, which gives the inverter figure. The DOE list's own monthly figure is lower (₱1,576 against ₱2,672) because it assumes fewer hours of use.

Window type or split type: which is better?

Split type is quieter and has no window opening to seal, but it needs tubing, an outdoor unit spot and an installer. Window type costs less to install, though many condos cap bedroom window units at 1.0 HP. Check your building's rules before you pick.
